# Best Practices for Building in Modus

Build spaces from the outside in. Define the room first, then add its contents.

### 1. Establish the maximum outer perimeter

* **Set outer dimensions first.** For rectangular spaces, open the **Project** tab. Define the maximum length, width, and ceiling height.
* **Use the Floor Plan Editor for complex spaces.**
  * Import the blueprint or floor plan. Calibrate its scale with a long, known dimension.
  * Draw the exterior walls clockwise along the blueprint's outer boundary.
  * Close the perimeter. Snap the final wall to the starting point. This prevents unwanted “ghost walls”.
* **Set the wall orientation.** Floor Plan Editor walls show their measured side. Most plans use interior dimensions. Keep the blue highlighted side facing into the room.

Walls from the Floor Plan Editor are locked structural elements. Use them only for the outer shell. Create movable partitions and columns with Modus objects.

### 2. Define architectural context and openings

Place features that interact with the outer walls before adding interior objects.

* **Doors and windows.** Drag doors and windows directly onto the outer walls.
* **Reference projection.** Place a **Reference Projection** object on the floor. Crop the image to the room boundaries. Project the layout onto the room surfaces for placement guidance.
* **Internal partitions and columns.** Use **Wall Blocks** or **Primitives**. You can resize, move, or refinish these objects later.

### 3. Add spatial anchors

With boundaries and structural elements locked, begin filling the room.

* **Place the focal point.** Insert the primary furniture piece, such as a conference table.
* **Measure clearances.** Use **Interactive Rulers** and snapping. Verify the spacing between furniture and walls. Maintain required circulation space.
* **Add seating.** Use **Alt + Drag** or the **Array** tool. Group the table and chairs with `Ctrl + G`.

### 4. Layer in AV and system technology

Mount technology after the interior layout is in place.

* **Wall-mounted displays.** Attach flat panels or video walls to the front outer wall. Set their diagonal size and elevation.
* **Cameras and video bars.** Snap cameras or video bars above or below displays. You can also place them on sidewalls. Modus selects the appropriate wall or table mount.
* **Ceiling and lighting infrastructure.** Place ceiling tile lights and ceiling microphones in the ceiling grid.

### 5. Validate the remaining space

Test whether the completed space works for occupants.

* **Populate virtual people.** Turn on the **Show People** assistant. Place virtual participants in the seats.
* **Verify the camera field of view.** Open the camera’s **Full Screen View**. Confirm that every seat falls within its physical pan, tilt, and zoom limits.
* **Check sightlines and viewing distances.** Turn on the **DISCUS Assistant**. Confirm that the farthest participants can read displayed content comfortably.
